Jakarta Flooding: Supermoon Tides Inundate Dozens of Neighborhoods

A combination of high tides and the recent full moon, known as a Supermoon, has led to significant flooding across Jakarta, Indonesia, impacting 23 residential areas and disrupting transportation on two major roadways. As of 2:00 PM WIB on Saturday, December 6, 2025, authorities are actively responding to the situation.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that the flooding is primarily affecting the northern coastal regions of the city. According to a statement released by the BPBD, “The phenomenon of maximum tides in sea water coincides with the phenomenon of the Full Moon and Perigee (Supermoon) phases which has the potential to increase the maximum height of sea tides in the form of coastal flooding or tidal flooding in the northern coastal area of Jakarta.” This confluence of astronomical events has exacerbated the risk of rob – a local term for tidal flooding – in vulnerable areas.

Impact Across the Thousand Islands

The Thousand Islands archipelago is experiencing the brunt of the flooding, with 17 RTs (neighborhood units) currently inundated. Specific details released by the BPBD include:

  • Tidung Island: 4 RTs affected, water levels reaching 10 centimeters.
  • Harapan Island: 3 RTs affected, with water levels between 10 and 20 centimeters.
  • Panggang Island: 4 RTs affected, experiencing water levels up to 30 centimeters.
  • Pari Island: 3 RTs affected, with water depths ranging from 10 to 30 centimeters.
  • Kelapa Island: 3 RTs affected, with water levels between 20 and 25 centimeters.

In all cases within the Thousand Islands, the situation is described as “still being handled” by local authorities.

North Jakarta Also Affected

Six RTs in North Jakarta are also grappling with the effects of the rob. The affected areas include:

  • Pluit: 3 RTs impacted, with water levels ranging from 25 to 60 centimeters.
  • Marunda: 3 RTs impacted, experiencing water levels between 20 and 35 centimeters.

Furthermore, two key road sections are partially submerged:

  1. Jl. RE. Martadinata (in front of the Jakarta International Stadium – JIS), Kelurahan Papanggo, Kecamatan Tanjung Priok.
  2. Jl. Lodan Raya, Kelurahan Ancol, Kecamatan Pademangan.

Water levels on these roadways are reported to be between 20 and 25 centimeters.

The BPBD DKI Jakarta has mobilized personnel to assess the extent of the flooding and is coordinating with various city services – including the Water Resources Service, Highways Service, and Fire and Rescue Service – to clear drainage systems and ensure infrastructure functionality. A senior official stated that efforts are underway to provide essential supplies to affected residents and that authorities are working to expedite the receding of the floodwaters.

The agency is also collaborating with local village and sub-district leaders to manage the response and provide support to those impacted by the rob.
