Opposition Leaders Snubbed at Putin Dinner, Sparking allegations of Political Motive
India’s political landscape is once again navigating complex diplomatic waters as key opposition figures were notably absent from a state dinner hosted for Russian President vladimir Putin.
The exclusion of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge from the dinner at the President’s residence on Friday has ignited a political firestorm, with the opposition alleging a intentional attempt by the Modi government to sideline them. While the invitation was extended to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, the omission of the Leaders of the Opposition in both Houses of Parliament has raised questions about the government’s intentions.
According to sources within the Congress party, neither Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha leader of the Opposition, nor Mallikarjun Kharge, the Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition, received an invitation to the dinner hosted by President Droupadi Murmu. Tharoor, however, confirmed he was invited and intends to attend.
The snub comes just one day after Gandhi publicly accused the Modi government of acting against “tradition” and deliberately preventing him, or any representative of the opposition, from meeting with Putin due to perceived “insecurity.” Putin is currently in India for a two-day visit focused on annual summit talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Responding to Tharoor’s invitation,a congress spokesperson,Pawan khera, stated that both the extension of the invitation and its acceptance are subject to scrutiny. “Those who extended such an invitation raise questions, and those who accepted are also open to scrutiny,” Khera said. He further emphasized the party’s stance, stating, “Everyone has thier own conscience, their own inner voice. Had we been invited instead of our leaders, it is clear that we would not have accepted it.”
The situation is further elaborate by Tharoor’s recent divergence from the official Congress line on several key issues. In February, the four-term MP faced criticism from the party’s Kerala unit after publishing an article that highlighted the burgeoning start-up scene in Kerala under Left Democratic front rule, asserting that “Kerala is beginning to stand out as a model of economic innovation and sustainable growth.”
More recently, last month, Tharoor again stirred controversy within the Congress leadership with an article addressing dynasty politics. In it, he argued that the Nehru-Gandhi family “cemented the idea that political leadership can be a birthright,” and that dynastic politics represents a “grave threat to Indian democracy,” advocating for a shift “from dynasty to meritocracy.”
These instances of independant thought from Tharoor add another layer of complexity to the current controversy, fueling speculation about the motivations behind his invitation to the presidential dinner while other prominent opposition leaders were excluded.
