Los Angeles, December 21, 2023 – James Ransone, a character actor celebrated for his roles in critically acclaimed television and film, has died by suicide at age 46, prompting an outpouring of grief from fellow performers. The actor, best known for portraying Ziggy Sobotka in HBO’s The Wire, was found dead on December 19.
A Versatile Talent Remembered by Peers
Ransone gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Ziggy Sobotka in The Wire‘s second season.

Filmmaker Spike Lee, who directed Ransone in both Inside Man (2006) and Red Hook Summer (2012), expressed his sorrow on Instagram, posting a photo of the two together. “Rest In Peace To my Dear Brother,MR. JAMES RANSONE. We Rocked Together On RED HOOK SUMMER And INSIDE MAN (sic),” Lee wrote, accompanied by blue hearts and praying emojis.
Wendell Pierce, Ransone’s co-star in The Wire, shared a brief but poignant message on X. “Sorry I couldn’t be there for you, brother.Rest in Peace James Ransone,” he posted.
Sean baker, the director of Tangerine and Starlet, both of which featured Ransone, also took to Instagram to share his grief. He posted a photo and wrote, “I’ll miss you dearly my freind.”
Madeleine McGraw, who appeared alongside ransone in The black Phone, shared a particularly moving tribute on her Instagram Stories. “I’m struggling to put into words the profound emptiness I’m feeling since learning of James ransone’s passing. My heart is absolutely shattered,” she wrote. McGraw recalled Ransone offering her and her parents “heartfelt advice” at the film’s 2021 premiere.
She continued, detailing how Ransone was equally gracious when he reprised his role for a cameo in Black Phone 2. “When he returned for his cameo in Black phone 2, he was just as humble and grateful, lighting up with pure excitement to be back on the Black Phone set,” McGraw shared. “We got to catch up,laugh,and connect again,and he was exactly the same: that radiant,passionate man overflowing with love for me,for his craft,and for his family.”
McGraw concluded, “James, you truly changed me. You inspired me in ways I’ll carry forever. And I promise, with everything in me, to live by the wisdom you shared with me that night at the premiere.I already miss you so deeply. Rest in peace, my friend. You were one of a kind.”
Beyond The Wire, Ransone’s career encompassed roles in Generation Kill, Sinister, and Treme. His cameo in Black Phone 2,released in October,marked his final screen appearance.
He is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their son.
