James Van Der Beek Dies at 48 Following Colon Cancer Battle
The actor, best known for his leading role in the hit series Dawson’s Creek, passed away peacefully this Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the age of 48 after a battle with colon cancer.
His family announced the news in a statement posted to social media, sharing that he faced his final days “with courage, faith and grace.” Van Der Beek was diagnosed with the disease in the latter half of 2023, but kept the news private until November 2024.
Van Der Beek rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s, captivating audiences with his performances in Dawson’s Creek and the film Varsity Blues. He continued to work steadily in television and film, demonstrating a versatility that endeared him to multiple generations of viewers.
According to an interview with Business Insider, the actor first noticed changes in his bowel movements, a common early symptom of colon cancer. He initially altered his diet, eliminating coffee, hoping to alleviate the issue before seeking medical evaluation. A subsequent screening revealed a stage three diagnosis, indicating the cancer had spread to nearby lymph nodes.
The Cleveland Clinic explains that colorectal cancer originates from growths within the colon and can become life-threatening if left untreated. The clinic also notes that the disease is statistically more prevalent in men than in women, though increased screening initiatives have demonstrably improved early detection rates and reduced mortality.
Van Der Beek, a father of six, openly shared the emotional toll of his treatment, revealing in a prior interview that he struggled with a loss of identity. “All these beautiful things that I love, and how I used to define myself — father, provider, husband — all of that was taken away from me, or at least stopped,” he said. “I had to think, ‘Well, what am I?’ And it was, ‘I’m still worthy of love.’”
Following his diagnosis, Van Der Beek dedicated himself to raising awareness about the importance of cancer screening, stating, “I have learned a lot. If I can save someone from having to go through this, that’s magical.”
He first gained widespread recognition playing Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, which aired from 1998 to 2003 alongside Katie Holmes. He also starred in the coming-of-age film Varsity Blues (1999). Later roles included a recurring part on the series Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and a stint on the 28th season of Dancing with the Stars. More recently, he made a guest appearance on the Prime Video comedy Overcompensating.
Despite facing health challenges, Van Der Beek made a surprise virtual appearance at a charity event on September 22, reuniting with his Dawson’s Creek co-stars. The event, which featured Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Busy Philipps, raised funds for the F Cancer charity and served as a tribute to the actor. Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to read lines originally intended for Van Der Beek.
In a 2020 interview with ABC News, Van Der Beek reflected on his childhood, revealing that he was initially shy and harbored aspirations of becoming an athlete rather than an actor.
Tributes have poured in from fellow actors and fans alike. Sarah Michelle Gellar, star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, expressed her sadness for Van Der Beek’s family, writing on Instagram that his “legacy will always live on.” Actress Jennifer Garner described his death as a “heartbreaking loss” and extended her condolences to his widow, Kimberly, and their children.
Busy Philipps, a co-star on Dawson’s Creek, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, expressing her grief for Van Der Beek’s wife and children. She also launched a fundraising campaign to support the family, stating, “He was one of a billion and he will be missed forever.”
The official Dawson’s Creek accounts on social media posted a photo of Van Der Beek as Dawson Leery, noting that his portrayal “helped define a generation of television.” SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors, honored Van Der Beek for his dedication to his craft, recognizing his ability to “bring sincerity, depth and feeling to his performances.” Actor Hal Ozsan, describing Van Der Beek as a brother, shared his profound sorrow on Instagram, stating that a “huge void” would remain in his heart.
