Japan sent its fighter jets on Friday in response to Russian patrols that were seen between the Sea of Japan and the Sea of China.
The two Russian planes flew along the coast of central and southern Japan, crossing the Tsushima Strait that connects the two seas and separates South Korea from Japan, before returning by the same route, the report said. The episode comes as Russia and China conduct joint naval maneuvers, with a detachment from both navies operating in the East China Sea, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. In June, China and Russia conducted a joint aerial patrol over the Japan and East China Seas, prompting South Korea to deploy fighter jets as a precaution.
Stemming the Russian Threat
This event also occurs on the day of an unprecedented summit near Washington between the United States, South Korea and Japan, intended to send a signal of unity to China as well as to North Korea. US President Joe Biden receives Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at Camp David on August 18.
The three countries must set up an “emergency communication channel” in a region that lives under the threat of North Korea’s nuclear program and fears an invasion of Taiwan by China. Japan joined Western allies in sanctioning Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and warned of the threat posed by Russia.
Its latest security document, which once called for stronger ties and cooperation with Russia, now warns that Moscow’s joint military exercises with China are problematic.
