Rio Operation Containment: Death Toll Climbs to 121, Family Seeks Privacy

A massive police operation in the Complexos do Alemão and Penha favelas of Rio de Janeiro has resulted in at least 121 deaths, prompting a plea from the sister of a key figure in the Red Command (CV) to remove images of her body from social media. The operation, dubbed “Containment,” underscores the escalating violence and challenges facing Brazilian authorities in their efforts to curb gang activity.

The sister of Penélope, known as “Japinha do CV,” publicly requested the removal of images circulating online following the intense clashes. She stated her intention to repurpose the profile for tributes, sharing only photos of her sister “happy and smiling.” This request highlights the profound grief and trauma experienced by families caught in the crossfire of these operations.

Key Figure in Red Command Killed in Action

Penélope was identified by police as a prominent member of the Red Command, considered a trusted and active participant in the faction’s operations. Reports indicate she engaged officers during the police approach and was fatally shot in the face during the confrontation. She was reportedly wearing camouflage clothing at the time of her death. The subsequent circulation of images and videos of her body fueled the family’s request for privacy.

Operation Containment: A Large-Scale Effort

Launched with the objective of halting the territorial expansion of the CV and executing approximately 100 arrest warrants, Operation Containment involved around 2,500 agents from the Civil and Military Police. The operation extended beyond Rio de Janeiro, with 30 targets identified in other states, including individuals linked to the faction in Pará.

According to a report from the Rio government, the death toll reached 121 as of Thursday morning. This figure includes 54 civilian bodies discovered on the day of the operation and an additional 63 found by residents in a forested area of Complexo da Penha on Wednesday. Tragically, four police officers – two from the military police and two from the civil police – also lost their lives during the operation.

Calls for Cooperation and Ongoing Concerns

Amidst the aftermath of Operation Containment, officials are emphasizing the need for continued collaboration. Castro and Lewandowski recently spoke of “the same objective” and announced cooperation in Rio, signaling a commitment to addressing the complex security challenges facing the region.

The scale of the loss of life raises serious questions about the tactics employed during the operation and the long-term impact on the communities affected. The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies that address both the immediate security concerns and the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to gang violence in Rio de Janeiro.
