Chilean Presidential Runoff Intensifies as Debate No-Show Sparks Criticism
Chile’s presidential runoff election is heating up, with candidate Jeannette Jara directly challenging her opponent, José Antonio Kast, following his decision to skip a scheduled debate. The absence from the televised event, organized by Mega for Sunday evening, has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with Jara accusing Kast of avoiding crucial scrutiny at a pivotal moment in the campaign.
Jara, representing the Unity for Chile and Christian Democracy coalition, took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice her concerns. “Kast decided not to appear at the debates. I am here, showing my face, with clear proposals and the courage to face the country’s challenges. When you want to govern, you talk to the people and don’t hide. “Chile deserves certainties, not evasion,” she wrote, framing Kast’s absence as a sign of weakness and a lack of accountability.
The escalating tension comes as Chile prepares to choose its next leader. Jara’s campaign has seized on Kast’s decision, portraying it as a deliberate attempt to sidestep difficult questions, particularly regarding security – a key issue in the election. “To go to a debate you need courage. And today it became clear who has it and who doesn’t. To confront organized crime and drug trafficking, even more courage is needed, because it is not enough to talk about security: you must have the conviction to act and give certainty to the country,” Jara stated.
She further emphasized a fundamental difference in their approaches to leadership. “I am here, facing Chile, with serious proposals, without hiding and willing to answer all questions. That is the difference between those of us who want to govern and those who prefer to be absent,” Jara asserted.
Kast’s rationale for declining the debate centered on his belief that such events are receiving disproportionate attention. He argued on Saturday that debates would not significantly alter voters’ perceptions, stating, “Is people’s perspective going to change due to a more or less debate? It is important, yes, we are going to have debates, but that everything focuses on that and not on the persecution of drug trafficking or terrorism, is unprecedented.” He also issued a challenge to Jara, urging her to visit the Franklin neighborhood, an area grappling with significant security challenges.
Jara swiftly responded to Kast’s challenge, stating her willingness to visit any location while reiterating her call for his participation in the televised debate. “I have all the disposition, I confirmed the five debates and I think it is important that Chile knows well what we think. It’s no use being locked in a glass box,” she said, hours before Kast’s absence was confirmed.
The debate cancellation and subsequent exchange highlight the increasingly polarized nature of the Chilean presidential race. As the runoff election nears, both candidates are vying to convince voters they possess the leadership qualities and vision necessary to address the country’s pressing challenges.
