Jeison Suárez consolidates himself as the best Colombian marathon runner, after his victory for the second consecutive year, in the Medellín Marathon, a competition that took place this Sunday, September 3, in the capital of Antioquia, with the presence of 18,600 athletes from 45 countries.
The Asics Elite Team runner changed his strategy compared to last year, when he was in charge of imposing the conditions and setting the pace of the competition. On this occasion, he was more expectant and waiting for the actions of his rivals, including the Kenyan Paul Kipkemoi Kipkorir, and the Colombians Carlos Mario Patiño and Franklin Téllez, also from the Asics Elite Team.

The race
At the beginning, the race was a bit slow and no one came out to propose a strong rhythm, a factor that Patiño took advantage of to lead, while Jeison, Franklin and the African continued to wait. But before completing the half marathon, the two Asics runners decided to cut the distance with Patiño, and that’s when the competition landscape changed, starting at kilometer 23.
When the leaders arrived at Sabaneta, once again regrouped, the one who began to drop was Franklin and Jeison and Carlos Mario marched ahead. Kipkorir was trying to defend third place and so they passed through the Envigado sector, with nine kilometers to go.
From that moment on, Jeison managed the race with his experience and waited for the right moment to make the change of pace at kilometer 35 and incidentally let go of Carlos Mario, who could not follow him, although he is recognized for his extraordinary competition, which it even helped him defend second place at the finish line.
“At first no one wanted to propose because of the reference brands we had and Patiño got away from us a bit but later we decided to pursue Franklin to reach him. Then I felt strong and made a change of pace to go in search of victory”, said Jeison.
Suárez won with a time of 2 hours 17 minutes and 24 seconds, followed by Patiño, with 2:18:04, which is his personal best, and the podium was completed by Kipkoriri, with 2:19:31, while Franklin Téllez He arrived fourth at the finish line, with a time of 2:20:21, and the top-5 was completed by Jonathan Castillo, with 2:23:08
Among the ladies, the lot remained compact until the first rays of the sun began to illuminate Medellín, in a race that started at 5:30 in the morning in the EPM Building sector.
The Kenyan Caroline Chepkirui dominated the test after kilometer 15, when she decided to go ahead and leave behind the South Americans, among whom was the Colombian Sandra Rosas, who preferred to stay in the lot with the Mexican Yuliana Navarro and the Peruvian Margarita Núñez .
And after kilometer 23, the lot of those who were chasing also stretched and each one began to manage their rhythms to defend the positions they were in at that moment.
In the end, the Kenyan Chepkirui prevailed with a time of 2:39:37, followed by the Peruvian Núñez, with 2:42:08, and the Colombian Sandra Marcela Rosas, with 2:44:58.

The 21 kilometer race
Within the framework of the Medellín Marathon, the 21-kilometer race was carried out in parallel, which also had a good level, both in women and men and which left two foreign athletes as winners.
Among the men, the Kenyan Joseph Kiprono Kiptum prevailed, who obtains his third victory in Medellín, after having also won in the 21 km of 2015 and 2019, and this time he did it again, after timing 1:05:06.
The best Colombian, like last year, was Miguel Amador from Bogotá, who established himself as a great long-distance runner and on this occasion finished second, with a time of 1:05:27 (in 2022 you had been fourth), above the Ecuadorian Christian Vásconez, third with 1:05:32
And in ladies, the first place was held by Bolivia, through Yesica Camargo, who crossed the finish line with a record of 1:14:14, followed by the Peruvian Marisol Cántara, while the best Colombian was Alexandra Aldana from Boyacá. , with 1:17:13.
