Ordway’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” Delivers a Thrilling, Rock-Infused Revival

A new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s iconic rock opera, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” is electrifying audiences at the Ordway Music Theater in St. Paul, offering a potent counterpoint to the season’s more traditional holiday fare. This staging, a revival of the 2016 Olivier Award-winning production from London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, isn’t simply a restaging; it’s a visceral experience that captures the raw energy of the original 1971 album while adding layers of theatrical depth.

The musical reimagines the final week of Jesus’ life, known as the “Passion,” through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Rather than a straightforward biblical retelling, “Jesus Christ Superstar” presents a politically charged narrative, portraying Jesus as a rebel whose message of peace threatens the established order in Roman-occupied Judea. As one observer noted, the production delves into the complexities of faith, betrayal, and power dynamics with a refreshing boldness.

This production is particularly noteworthy as its run at the Ordway serves as the launchpad for an international tour slated to begin in Asia next spring. Director Timothy Sheader, choreographer Drew McOnie, and designer Tom Scutt have embraced the “Superstar” moniker, incorporating prominent microphone stands into the staging, evoking the dynamic stage presence of rock legends like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Queen’s Freddie Mercury.

The performances are a driving force behind the production’s success. Jack Hopewell delivers a compelling portrayal of Jesus, seamlessly transitioning between soaring vocal runs and tender ballads. Equally captivating is Elvie Ellis as Judas, imbuing the role with a palpable sense of anguish and conviction. While the five-piece onstage band occasionally overwhelms the lyrics, the Ordway’s recently upgraded sound system ensures an immersive experience without sacrificing clarity.

The supporting cast shines as well. Isaac Ryckeghem’s menacing Caiaphas, Kodiak Thompson’s malevolent Annas, Hosea Mundi’s imposing Simon, and Erich W. Schleck’s flamboyantly theatrical Herod all contribute to the production’s dramatic intensity. While Faith Jones’ Mary Magdalene possesses a beautiful voice, the performance could benefit from a deeper exploration of the character’s internal conflicts.

The production’s energy is infectious, a “briskly paced whirlwind of movement and arrestingly emotional singing” that holds the audience captive for its 100 intermission-less minutes. The cast’s impassioned performances are as radiant as the holiday lights illuminating the park outside the Ordway.
