John Lithgow on JK Rowling’s Trans Views

John Lithgow Defends Taking Dumbledore Role Amidst JK Rowling Controversy

The veteran actor John Lithgow has publicly addressed the backlash he received for accepting the role of Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, stating that the criticism “upsets” him.Lithgow’s comments, made during a Q&A session at the Rotterdam film festival following a screening of his latest film Jimpa, come as the series faces continued scrutiny due to the author J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues.

Acknowledging the Disconnect

“He acknowledged the irony of Rowling’s publicly stated views, describing them as “ironic adn somewhat inexplicable.”

Navigating a Complex Production

The actor clarified Rowling’s limited direct involvement in the new series, noting, “She’s not really involved in this production at all. The people who are re-adapting Harry Potter… are remarkable.” He expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with the creative team currently bringing the beloved books to the screen.

Lithgow revealed a personal connection to the controversy, recounting how a friend with a transgender child sent him an open letter urging him to decline the role. “It was a hard decision,” he admitted.”It made me uncomfortable and unhappy that people insisted I walk away from the job. I chose not to do that.”

Facing Public Disappointment

The actor acknowledged the strong reactions to his decision, stating that an audience member at the rotterdam festival even left the room in protest after expressing their disappointment. Despite this, Lithgow maintained his position, asserting, “I’m perfectly ready for collisions of opinion. I understand it.” He further defended his choice by highlighting the inclusive themes present within the Harry Potter universe itself, stating, “But in Potter canon you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity. She has written this meditation of kindness and acceptance.”

Rowling’s Stance and Industry fallout

Rowling’s controversial views first gained widespread attention in 2020,when she published a lengthy online statement criticizing proposed changes to gender recognition laws. She has repeatedly voiced opposition to “new trans activism” and expressed concerns about the inclusion of transgender women in spaces designated for cisgender women. Her views have led to donations totaling £70,000 to For Women Scotland and the establishment of the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, dedicated to supporting “women’s sex-based rights.”

The controversy has prompted several actors associated with the Harry Potter franchise to publicly distance themselves from Rowling’s views. Nick Frost, who will portray Hagrid in the new series, and Paapa Essiedu, cast as Snape, have both expressed differing opinions. Rowling, however, stated last year that she would not take action against Essiedu for supporting trans rights, asserting, “I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs.”

The original stars of the Harry Potter films – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint – along with Eddie Redmayne of the Fantastic Beasts series, have all issued statements critical of Rowling’s position.

A Decade-long Adaptation

HBO’s ambitious adaptation of the Harry Potter books is slated to premiere in 2027 and is projected to span ten years. According to Casey Bloys, chair and CEO of HBO and Max Content, the series will be a “faithful adaptation” of rowling’s novels. Lithgow, now 80 years old, jokingly remarked on the commitment, stating, “I signed a contract – I will be playing Dumbledore for the next eight years! I absolutely have to keep at it. I felt: ‘Wow! That means I will live to be 88.’ I have that in writing.”
