José María Arias, president of Banco Pastor, dies at 70

José María Arias Mosquerapresident of the Barrie Foundation since 2009 and Banco Pastor from 2001 until its absorption by Santander in 2017, died this Monday at the age of 70, as reported today by the first of these entities. Born in Santiago, he had a degree in Law from the University of Compostela and developed his professional career in the financial institution chaired by his aunt, Carmela Arias and Díaz de Rábago.

After the acquisition of Pastor in 2009 by Banco Popular, he also became vice president of the latter, although the brand of the Galician entity was maintained. With the purchase of Popular by Santander in 2017, Pastor disappeared and he abandoned his management positions at the bank to focus on the Barrié Foundation.

This entity highlights its “discreet hard work and commitment in all areas of action”, as well as “loyalty to its objectives”. According to the foundation, he always had Pedro Barrié de la Maza and Carmela Arias as a reference, of whom he said: “He showed us the way, she explained to us how to make it a reality.”

The foundation expresses its “gratitude to those who deserved the trust placed in them by the previous president.”

He highlights that during his presidency the restoration of the Pórtico de la Gloria was completed, the entity’s scholarship plans were modernized, support for research in Galicia continued and projects such as improving living conditions and social reintegration of inmates of Galician penitentiary centers.
