José Peseiro’s Nigeria beat South Africa on penalties this Wednesday (1-1, 4-2 ap) and thus booked a place in the final of the African Cup of Nations. The 63-year-old Portuguese coach rises to the top of football on that continent by leading the ‘green eagles’ to the CAN decision 11 years later. With Porto player Zaidu out due to injury, the Nigerian team took the lead from the penalty spot in the 67th minute through William Troost-Ekong, PAOK defender. At the final whistle of regulation time, also a penalty, Teboho Mokoena equalized. Now we just have to wait for the clash between Côte d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo, scheduled for shortly (8 p.m.), to find out who will face each other in the final, an objective that has failed since 2013. In that edition, Nigeria won (1 -0) Burkina Faso and won the third CAN in history.
