Encouraging media professionals to use data in their journalistic work is the objective set by the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD).

For Boureima Ouédraogo, Director General of the INSD, it is often difficult to find the right information or the exploitation of its data is a problem, hence the organization of this meeting in order to give a certain number of training sessions on statistical concepts. around the indicators, the definitions and how to use its indicators wisely so that not only the journalist can be able to use well but that he can effectively transmit his information to a wider audience.

Abdou Nombré, a statistician engineer who is also one of the trainers, adds that the objective of this training is to enable all Burkinabe people to use statistics in their daily activities.

« INSD produces a lot of information but it has been found that its information is not used in several places. This prompted us to formulate an activity for media professionals to discuss the key concepts and key indicators that we have defined in particular on the 2019 general population census. he says.

During this training, several platforms deployed by the INSD and the national statistical system to be able to disseminate all statistical productions were made available to journalists. Abdou Ganema, adds that during this training, they went beyond what they had planned.

“When we look a bit at the content we have prepared, we have noticed that we have gone beyond what we planned as content to present. It shows how interested media professionals are in data. What we also found, people didn’t know where the data was or people were looking for the data but they didn’t know how to access the data.” he confides.

More than a dozen online, audio-visual and written press journalists took part in this training which was spread over 5 days. Moment of sharing and giving, its media men say they are satisfied.

“I discovered that there is a lot of data at the level of Burkina Faso in general, on almost all the subjects concerning the life of the populations. We worked on the results of the 5th general population census. We also had a session on the Burkina Faso open data platform, which caught our attention because it contains all the data, whether social, health, climate and environment, and at the level of Burkina’s economy. We can even compare its data with the WAEMU zone,” says Elsa Sandrine Sawadogo, journalist at l’Economiste du Faso.

The National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD), for a first experience through this training, does not intend to stop there. It intends to equip media men on other themes on statistics so that all actors and users can appropriate key concepts.
