When Judith Kerr was nine years old, Hitler put a price on her father’s head. Alfred Kerr was a famous theater critic, as media-savvy as anyone could be in Germany in the 1930s. A friend of Ibsen and Einstein, a reference for the Berlin intelligentsia, he openly criticized Nazism without even predicting everything that was to come.

“In those years, no one in Germany thought that Hitler, despite his screams and ravings, would amount to anything,” Judith Kerr herself explained years later. But everything changed in just a breath. Someone put Alfred Kerr on a list of targets to eliminate when the Nazis came to power. And it’s not just that the name appeared. What’s more, he was second on the list.
