Yesterday, Julio Soto Ezkurdia (Gorriti, 1987) wore the hat for the sixth time after winning the head-to-head match against Eneko Lazkozi and accumulating 1,048 points. However, the competition was close and until the last moment it was not clear who the jury would name as the 2023 champion. The bertsola singers performed in the order determined by the lottery: Joanes Illarregi, Josu Sanjurjo, Saioa Alkaiza, Xabat Illarregi, Lazkoz, Saats Karasatorre, Sarai Robles and Soto.

Eneko Lazkoz finished second with 1045.5 points. Xabat Illarregi (635.5), Joanes Illarregi (601), the champion of the 2021 tournament, Saioa Alkaiza (594), Josu Sanjurjo (569.5), Saats Karasatorre (556) and Sarai Robles (550.5) were ranked next. Alaitz Recondo, who has been the president of the Navarre Bertsozale Association for the past twelve years, wore the hat to the winner, in the most crowded final ever in Navarre. In fact, yesterday, 2,350 versto fans gathered at the Anaitasuna sports center in Pamplona, and the atmosphere was as expected: beautiful.

Presented by Ainhoa Larretxea and theme set by Ander Aranburu, the event began at 17:00 in the evening and the eight bertsolists had to face five tasks: two in the big eight, two in the small eight, individually in the answer point, two in the small ten, and individually in a solo work. At the end of these, Lazkoz and Soto accumulated the most points and went head-to-head. In this section, they worked on short points and short sixes at the beginning, and ended the day’s scoring session with the attic work.

Six out of eleven

After all the work was done, the name of the champion was announced and Navarre fans applauded for the sixth time after Soto’s victory in 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2019. Yesterday was the eleventh final of the Orotara tournament, the first in 2006.

For his part, Lazkoz was eighth, the third final for the Illarregi brothers, and the second final for Sanjurjo and Alkaizaran. The first for Saats Karasatorre and Sarai Robles.

Last October 7th, the Navarra Bertsolari Championship started in Iruritan, and, with the aim of spreading bertsolari to the whole of Navarre, it has crossed the territory for two months.
