Kabul Baby | Parents retrieve baby thrown by US soldier over barbed wire at Kabul airport

by time news
Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, a video of parents throwing their baby child over a barbed wire fence in front of Kabul Airport has sparked outrage around the world. The baby was handed over to soldiers by a family of panicked people who rushed to Kabul airport to flee the country.

The parents were waiting for the baby to be returned. Sohail Ahmadi was returned to his parents four months later. Sohail Ahmadi, who was only two months old at the time of the incident, was safely rescued by his parents four months later. Countries, including the United States, have sought to evacuate people by air and border, with the Taliban taking control of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

On August 19, Mirza Ali Ahmadi, a security guard at the US Embassy, and his wife Suraya arrived at the Kabul airport to fly to the US. There was a huge crowd in front of the airport gate that day. Mirza Ali then handed the child over to a security guard in an American uniform to buy it later.

It was during this time that the Taliban pushed the crowd out of the airport gate. With this, Mirza Ali, his wife and four children were inside the airport and the child was outside. However, Mirza Ali tried to find Sohail but could not. The United States then airlifted Mirza and his family to a military base in Texas.

Sohail’s disappearance was reported in Reuters last November. Hamid Shafi, a 29-year-old taxi driver in Kabul, was later found in possession of a child. The boy was handed over to his grandfather after talks with Hamid Shafi and Taliban police.

Hamid Shafi, a taxi driver, was outside the Kabul airport when Mirza Ali lost Sohail. Shafi arrived at the airport to pick up his brother and family who had decided to leave Afghanistan. Shafi notices a crying baby on the ground alone behind the hustle and bustle outside the airport gate. The child’s parents searched the area but could not find him. With this, Shafi decided to take Sohail home and raise her with her three other daughters.

Shafi’s decision was to keep the baby and hand it over to his family if found, or raise it. Shafi’s arrival with the child from the airport months ago came to the attention of some neighbors after Reuters reported that Sohail had gone missing. Recognizing the picture of the child, they wrote in the comment section of the Reuters article where Sohail is.

Upon learning of the incident, Mirza Ali asked his father-in-law, Mohammad Qasim Razavi, to locate the child in Badakhshan, a northeastern province of Afghanistan. After traveling for two days and two nights, his grandfather approached Saihail.

However, Shafi initially refused to release Sohail, demanding that he and his family be relocated to the U.S. from Afghanistan. Shafi’s brother in California also made it clear that it was not possible. The grandfather approached the local Taliban police, claiming that the child had been abducted when Shafi could not be reconciled. The police then conducted an investigation and agreed to hand over the child after paying the expenses. According to the agreement, the grandfather, Razavi, released the child after paying one lakh Afghanis.

Mirza Ali and his family are currently living in an apartment in Michigan, away from the military base in Texas.
