This is the first time that the World Chess Olympiad is being held in India, the land of Chaturanga. The venue is Mahabalipuram near Chennai. 11 round match from 28th to 10th August. It is an all-time record for the number of participating teams. -187 in open category and 162 in women category. India has three teams in both categories.

1700 stars will shake hands at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Mahabalipuram. First round match on 29th at 3 pm. Viswanathan Anand as mentor along with veterans like P Harikrishna, K Sasikiran and Suryasekhar Ganguly.

In the women’s category, the Indian team led by world-class players Koneru Hampi and Harika Dronavalli has been seeded first. The American team consisting of Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So and Lev Aronian is the top seed in the open category. Norway and Azerbaijan, led by world champion Magnus Carlsen, are challenging. Ukraine and Georgia are strong in the women’s category.

Olympiad and Kerala

Three Keralites represented India in the Chess Olympiad. NR Anilkumar (1982), GN Gopal (2004, 2010, 2012) and Nihal Sarin (2020, 2021). This time, SL Narayanan (Thiruvananthapuram) and Nihal Sarin (Thrissur) got a place in the Indian A team.
