A determined competitor is cautiously optimistic about her chances at future competitions, despite a recent history of devastating injuries that derailed her participation in major international events. The athlete, a double Olympic gold medallist, is focused on the 2026 games as a key milestone in her career.
A History of Disappointment
The 31-year-old from Glasgow acknowledges the emotional toll of past setbacks. “With any of these events you get this little mix of excitement and nerves,” she stated. A particularly painful memory involves being struck by a vehicle prior to the 2022 Birmingham Games, forcing her withdrawal after completing all pre-event preparations. “I got hit by a car before Birmingham and didn’t make it to the Games, having done the announcement, the pictures, everything, so there’s something in my chest that just feels a bit nervous.” This incident, coupled with a similar withdrawal from the Olympics two years later, has understandably fostered a degree of caution.
From Track to Velodrome
While now a prominent figure in her current discipline, the athlete’s sporting journey began elsewhere. She recalls attending the Birmingham Games in 2014 as a budding track and field athlete, with her most vivid memory being the heptathlon at Hampden, rather than events in the Velodrome. This highlights a significant shift in her athletic focus over the years.
Pursuit of a Medal
Despite missing out on medals in the sprint, team sprint, and keirin at the 2022 Games, the athlete remains resolute in her ambition. “I’m definitely pushing for a medal and I think that’s an achievable goal,” she affirmed. She credits ongoing training and accumulated experience as key factors in her progress.
The Power of Home Support
The Commonwealth Games holds a special significance for the athlete, fueled by the energy of a supportive crowd. “The Commonwealth Games is such a special race and any time we can have a Saltire on our backs, the Scottish flags waving, and my friends and family in the crowd is really special.” This connection to her roots serves as a powerful motivator as she prepares for future challenges.
