TikTok’s inaugural US awards ceremony celebrated its top creators on a night marked by a significant shift in the platform’s ownership structure.
Los Angeles, CA – Keith Lee was crowned TikTok Creator of the Year at the first-ever TikTok Awards US, held Thursday at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. The fan-voted ceremony, hosted by television personality La La Anthony, recognized talent across fourteen categories, coinciding with a pivotal agreement that will reshape TikTok’s American operations.
A Night of Recognition for TikTok’s Stars
The awards ceremony saw a diverse range of creators honored for their contributions to the platform. Jeremiah Brown (@findjeremiah), known for his appearances on Love Island USA, took home the Rising Star of the Year award, while Tini Younger (@tinekeyounger) was recognized as Storyteller of the Year. The TikTok for Good award was presented to Zach and Pat Valentine (@valentinebrothers), acknowledging their positive impact through the platform.
Bretman Sacayanan (@bretmanrock) secured the Video of the Year gong for a viral clip featuring the creator and a flock of chickens, set to Doechii’s “Anxiety.” Performances during the event included sets from R&B star Ciara and the enigmatic online persona Mr Fantasy, speculated by many to be Riverdale actor KJ Apa.
The ceremony also drew high-profile presenters, including noughties icon Paris Hilton, US gymnast Jordan Chiles, and former reality television star Bethenny Frankel. Nominees for Creator of the Year alongside Lee included comedian Adam Waheed and lifestyle influencers Kristy Sarah, Alix Earle, and Brooke Monk.
The awards show unfolded on the same day ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, reached binding agreements with US and global investors to take a majority stake in its American business. According to a memo released by ByteDance CEO Shou Zi Chew, the deal aims to address longstanding national security concerns raised by Washington.
The proposed joint venture will be 50% owned by a consortium of investors, including Oracle, Silver Lake, and the Emirati investment firm MGX. ByteDance will retain a 19.9% ownership stake, while Oracle, Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based MGX will each hold 15%. An additional 30.1% will be held by existing ByteDance investors.
“This deal will enable over 170 million Americans to continue discovering a world of endless possibilities as part of a vital global community,” a company release stated. The agreement, slated to close on January 22, represents a culmination of years of pressure from US officials to either divest TikTok’s American operations or face a potential ban.
The restructuring signifies a major turning point for TikTok as it seeks to solidify its position in the US market while navigating complex geopolitical challenges. The platform’s future, and the continued influence of its creators, now hinges on the successful implementation of this landmark ownership deal.
