Kevin Spacey Reveals Homelessness Amid Financial Strain and Career Fallout
Despite a recent legal victory, actor Kevin Spacey is facing significant financial hardship and a lack of stable housing, revealing he is currently living in hotels and Airbnbs. The two-time Oscar winner detailed his situation in an interview with the U.K.’s The Telegraph published on Wednesday, attributing his circumstances to mounting legal costs and a dramatic decline in work opportunities following numerous allegations of sexual misconduct.
Financial Difficulties and Loss of Property
Spacey explained that his financial situation has been “not great,” leading to the auction of his former home in Baltimore. “The costs over these last seven years have been astronomical,” he stated. “I’ve had very little coming in and everything going out.” He emphasized the transient nature of his current living arrangements, stating, “I’m living in hotels, I’m living in Airbnbs. I’m going where the work is. I literally have no home, that’s what I’m attempting to explain.”
A History of Allegations and Legal Battles
Since 2017, Spacey has been publicly accused of sexual misconduct by over a dozen men. While consistently denying the allegations, he has faced a series of legal challenges. In 2023, he was acquitted in a London case involving accusations from four men spanning from 2001 to 2013. Additionally, a civil lawsuit brought by actor Anthony Rapp in 2022, alleging abuse dating back to 1986, resulted in a finding of no liability for Spacey.
Seeking a Path to Professional Rehabilitation
Despite the ongoing repercussions, Spacey has continued to work, taking on roles in smaller productions helmed by emerging filmmakers and even performing a variety show in Cyprus. He expressed optimism about a potential career resurgence, noting that he is in contact with “extremely powerful people who want to put me back to work.” However, he believes the entertainment industry is awaiting a signal from established figures.
“What I think the industry seems to be waiting for is to be given permission — by someone who is in some position of enormous respect and authority,” Spacey said. He specifically cited directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, stating, “So, my feeling is if Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino call Evan [his manager, Evan Lowenstein] tomorrow, it will be over. I will be incredibly honored and delighted when that level of talent picks up the phone.”
