Sampson’s Hall of Fame Bid: A Career Defined

Kelvin Sampson is one step closer to basketball immortality, having been named a finalist for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

  • Sampson is a first-time nominee for the Hall of Fame.
  • He needs 18 votes from the 24-member Honors Committee to be inducted.
  • The class of 2024 will be announced at the Final Four in Indianapolis in early April.

The announcement on Wednesday marks a significant milestone for Sampson, a coach who has quietly built a remarkable career over nearly four decades. To earn induction, he must secure 18 votes from the Hall of Fame’s 24-member Honors Committee. The inductees will be revealed at the Final Four in Indianapolis this April.

Climbing the Coaching Everest

Sampson, reflecting on the honor during a video call with reporters, described the experience as akin to scaling Mount Everest. “It’s been a great journey,” he said. “When you talk about the Naismith Hall of Fame, that’s Mount Everest. That’s how they define the best. I’ve never associated myself with the people, the coaches, the players, the contributors. You just toil away in anonymity and work for the passion because you love coaching, you love helping kids reach their goals and have a chance to impact their lives.”

Evaluating Sampson’s Hall of Fame Credentials

In 12 seasons at Houston, Sampson has orchestrated a stunning program resurgence, highlighted by two trips to the Final Four. Under his leadership, the Cougars boast a 6.36 winning percentage and have made seven NCAA Tournament appearances. He reached the 800 career wins milestone earlier this season, a feat many consider a benchmark for Hall of Fame consideration.

Currently the 14th all-time winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball with 37 years of experience, Sampson has guided four different programs – Washington State, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Houston – to a combined 20 NCAA Tournament appearances and three Final Fours.

His accolades extend to 17 conference regular-season or tournament championships and 11 Coach of the Year awards.

Finalists who don’t receive enough votes for induction will remain on the ballot for future consideration. However, if they aren’t elected by the Honors Committee within five years, their candidacy is suspended for another five-year period. Former Houston coach Guy V. Lewis experienced this lengthy wait before his eventual induction in 2013 at the age of 91.

What is the voting process for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame?

Finalists require 18 votes from the 24-member Honors Committee to be inducted. Those who don’t reach this threshold remain eligible for future consideration, but face a potential five-year suspension if not elected within five years.
