Cemetery Fire in Konin Linked to Possible Torch Explosion
A fire erupted at a cemetery in Konin, Poland, late Thursday evening, causing significant damage to a gravesite and prompting a swift response from local fire crews. Preliminary investigations suggest a possible torch explosion may have ignited the blaze.
The incident unfolded around 10:25 PM local time, quickly engulfing a grave in the section behind the former Evangelical cemetery. Witnesses described a rapidly escalating fire, with flames reaching over 10 meters in height.
“He fired the Snitch, you could hear it from afar,” recounted a local resident, Mr. Piotr Pęcherski, who was at the cemetery with his family. “A moment later, the column of fire went up – about ten meters. I reported the fire, and the fire brigade from ul. Bankowa arrived in five minutes.”
Firefighters were able to bring the situation under control within minutes, preventing the fire from spreading further. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, during the extinguishing process, a secondary sound was heard. “When the firefighters started to extinguish the fire, we heard another dull shot,” Pęcherski added. “It is possible that the tombstone cracked due to sudden cooling.”
The fire’s rapid spread caused ash to drift onto nearby streets, coating parked cars. “Mine was all gray with ash,” a local resident shared in an interview with the “LM” portal.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, authorities are focusing on the possibility that an exploding torch was the source of the ignition. The incident highlights the potential dangers associated with open flames and the importance of adhering to safety regulations when using pyrotechnic devices.
The Konin fire department has not released further details at this time, but a full investigation is underway to determine the definitive cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
