‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Ascends to Oscar Contender Status

Netflix’s groundbreaking animated musical has secured a spot on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ list of 35 films eligible for the 98th Academy Awards. The film’s success story, fueled by massive viewership and a strategic theatrical release, positions it as a serious contender in the animated feature category.

The Korean-American urban-fantasy, released on June 20, 2025, overcame a significant hurdle for streaming-first productions by qualifying for Oscar consideration through a limited theatrical run in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco that same month. This move satisfied the Academy’s exhibition rule, opening the door for the film to be considered for nomination.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and produced by Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, “KPop Demon Hunters” presents a unique narrative: the K-pop girl group Huntr/x secretly battles demonic forces, specifically the rival boy band Saja Boys. The voice cast boasts a stellar lineup of Korean-American talent, including Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and veteran Korean actor Lee Byung-hun. The film’s sonic landscape, crafted by Marcelo Zarvos, has become a cultural phenomenon, with the soundtrack achieving record-breaking success.

“Golden,” an original song from the film, is not only a chart-topping hit but also a potential nominee in the Best Original Song race. According to a company release, the album shattered records, achieving the most simultaneous top-ten entries on the Billboard Hot 100 for any film soundtrack.

The film’s appeal extends beyond its musical achievements. Critics have lauded “KPop Demon Hunters” as “a cultural phenomenon,” praising its innovative animation style. This style is described as a dynamic blend of concert-lighting effects, editorial photography aesthetics, anime influences, and the storytelling traditions of Korean dramas—all brought to life by Sony Pictures Animation. With 325 million global views, it quickly became Netflix’s most-watched original animated title, and its sing-along version even topped the U.S. box office charts.

Now, as the Academy narrows its list to five nominees, the competition intensifies. The Animation Branch will cast its votes, with other Academy members eligible to participate if they meet the viewing requirements. Shortlists for other award categories will be revealed on Dec. 16, 2025, but the animated feature shortlist has already been established. The official nominees will be announced on Jan. 22, 2026, culminating in the 98th Academy Awards ceremony on Mar. 15, 2026. If the film’s widespread popularity, critically acclaimed soundtrack, and visually stunning animation are any indication, the Huntr/x may very well be the next animated heroes to claim the coveted Oscar.
