Ukraine Dismisses Former Defense Minister Kuzmuk as Advisor to Territorial Defense Forces
A recent shakeup within Ukraine’s military leadership has seen the dismissal of Army General Alexander Kuzmuk, a former Minister of Defense, from his position as a freelance advisor to the commander of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The decision, announced on December 7, followed media reports regarding Kuzmuk’s recent activities.
The Territorial Defense Forces confirmed Kuzmuk’s removal, stating, “According to today’s decision by the commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Kuzmuk has been dismissed from the position of freelance adviser.” The specific reasons for the dismissal remain undisclosed.
The move comes after the Territorial Defense Forces publicized on December 6 that Kuzmuk had presented departmental awards and gifts to military personnel. He was initially appointed to the advisory role on October 14, 2022.
A Controversial Figure in Ukrainian Politics
Kuzmuk’s career has been marked by both high-level service and political controversy. He served as Minister of Defense under President Leonid Kuchma from 1996 to 2001, and again briefly at the end of 2004 and the beginning of 2005. In 2007, he held the post of Deputy Prime Minister for a short period.
Beyond his ministerial roles, Kuzmuk was a member of parliament for multiple terms – the 4th, 6th, and 7th convocations – representing the Party of Regions. This affiliation has drawn scrutiny, particularly in light of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to distance itself from pro-Russian political figures.
President Volodymyr Zelensky previously dismissed Kuzmuk from military service in 2019. Furthermore, assessments have indicated that Ukraine’s defense capabilities diminished during his tenure as Defense Minister.
Leadership Changes in the Territorial Defense Forces
The dismissal of Kuzmuk coincides with broader leadership changes within the Territorial Defense Forces. On February 11, 2024, President Zelensky appointed Igor Plakhuta as the new commander, replacing Anatoly Bargilevich.
Plakhuta’s past is also subject to scrutiny. During the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, he served in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and led the Internal Troops during the dispersal of protestors on the Maidan. Following his appointment, Plakhuta affirmed his loyalty to Ukraine and its people, detailing his actions since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
The recent personnel changes signal a continued effort by Ukraine to reshape its military leadership and address concerns about past affiliations and performance as the conflict with Russia continues.
