West Virginia Basketball Faces Identity Crisis After High Expectations

A strong first year under Darian DeVries has given way to growing concerns as the West Virginia Mountaineers struggle to replicate past success, revealing a critical lack of offensive versatility and defensive consistency. The team’s current challenges highlight the difficulty of sustaining high expectations without a clearly defined identity.

The Mountaineers entered the season with heightened expectations following DeVries’ impressive debut. However, a recent analysis reveals a team grappling with fundamental issues on both ends of the court. A key problem lies in their defensive performance against high-major opponents, where they’ve yielded shooting percentages of 38%, 46%, 45%, and 51%. The game against Pitt, a team now considered underwhelming after a loss to Quinnipiac, is a stark example of these defensive vulnerabilities.

“If you don’t have a group that has a clear identity, it’s going to make life extremely difficult,” one analyst stated. The current squad appears to lack a cohesive strategy, particularly when opponents adjust to their defensive schemes. This puts immense pressure on individual players to carry the offensive load.

Currently, Honor Huff stands as the team’s most reliable offensive threat, excelling as a three-point specialist. However, relying solely on a single player for scoring is unsustainable. The Mountaineers struggle with three-point shooting as a team, lack a dominant interior presence, and are not proficient at the free-throw line.

Chance Moore has shown flashes of ability to drive to the basket, but his effectiveness is hampered by a lack of floor spacing. Defenses are not forced to respect the shooting of other Mountaineers, allowing them to focus their attention on containing Moore and Huff.

The contrast between this year’s team and last year’s is striking. Javon Small, a key contributor in the previous season, possessed the ability to create his own shot from anywhere on the floor. While Huff is a capable shooter, he doesn’t offer the same diverse skillset. “That’s what this team needs to be able to overcome its offensive shortcomings,” according to a source close to the program.

Despite these challenges, the season is still young, and there is time for improvement. However, the reality is that opponents will continue to evolve throughout the year. The Mountaineers must find solutions quickly to avoid falling further behind.
