A high-speed pursuit of a suspected car thief in Los Angeles ended tragically Monday night when the driver exited a moving van on the 110 Freeway and was struck by multiple vehicles, authorities confirmed. The incident, broadcast live by local news channels, unfolded after the suspect refused to yield to police.
The Los Angeles Police Department initiated the chase shortly after 8:30 p.m. after Officer Drake Madison attempted to pull over the driver of a van believed to be stolen. According to police, the suspect fled onto the 110 Freeway, initiating a pursuit that would quickly escalate into a fatal encounter.
Dramatic Freeway Pursuit Leads to Crash
Shortly before 9 p.m., as news helicopters provided live aerial coverage, the suspect crashed the van into the center divider on the northbound side of the freeway near the Avenue 43 exit in Montecito Heights. Eyewitness accounts, captured by KTLA-TV Channel 5, showed the suspect climbing out of the driver’s side window while the van remained in motion.
The suspect, described as wearing a hooded sweater, stumbled backward after exiting the vehicle and fell into the southbound lanes. Tragically, he was immediately struck by an oncoming SUV. Police confirmed the man was subsequently hit by additional vehicles.
Emergency Response and Traffic Impact
Officers immediately rendered aid to the suspect until the arrival of paramedics. Despite their efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles Fire Department. The identity of the deceased remains unknown, pending notification by the county medical examiner.
Adding another layer to the scene, animal control workers were dispatched to remove a dog found inside the stolen van.
The incident caused significant traffic disruption. The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert shortly after 10 p.m., which remained in effect for several hours on the southbound side of the 110 Freeway. .
