The iconic Land Rover Defender has undergone a major transformation, stepping into the 21st century with an 8-tonne track, and proving itself to be a commercial success. While some may be hesitant to let go of the classic image of the Defender, the move to modernize the vehicle has opened up new possibilities for the company.
The modern Defender features a plug-in hybrid version that allows for electric travel for a portion of the time, and the rest of the time operates on a hybrid drive that is more economical on fuel in traffic jams and urban crawling. The transition to a modern production line and the use of a platform that serves additional models in the manufacturer’s line has helped to lower production costs, making the new Defender a practical and efficient option.
The drive system is powered by a 2.0L turbo gasoline engine with direct injection, along with an electric motor, providing a combined output of 404 hp and 65 kgm available from 1,500 rpm. The electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 19.2 kWh, allowing for an electric range of up to 43 km emission-free.
Despite its modern upgrades, the new Defender still maintains impressive off-road capabilities, with smart touches that off-road enthusiasts appreciate, such as a hard floor trunk, high tie-down points at the back, and power outlets for both 12 and 230 volts.
However, there are some downsides to the new Defender, such as the relatively high fuel consumption, as well as noticeable wind noise from the area of beam A and the side mirrors. Additionally, the AC charging is only 7.4 kW, which may be disappointing for some users.
