A growing sense of pressure may be impacting Oscar Piastri’s title bid, as the young driver struggled in qualifying, finishing behind rivals Lando norris, Kimi Antonelli, and Charles Leclerc. The performance marks a important downturn in form for Piastri, who previously appeared unflappable earlier in the season.
Piastri, currently in his third Formula 1 season, acknowledged the difficulties he faced on the track. “just feels like things are not flowing that easily at the moment, you know?” he said. Despite a confident feeling with the car on Thursday, he found conditions more challenging on Friday. “Today felt like it was a bit trickier for everybody and just struggled to get the most out of the car.”
Title Contention Under Strain
The 24-year-old remains optimistic about his overall chances, stating, “I’ve still got the belief that I can go out and win races and win the championship but, you know, obviously things are not coming as easy as I’d like them to.” However, the qualifying results raise concerns about his ability to maintain a strong challenge. He recognizes the need to make gains during the race itself, outlining a strategy to “just try and pass a few cars…just try and capitalise on any opportunities that come up.”
A key factor influencing race strategy will be tire selection. Piastri expressed uncertainty about the performance of the soft tires, noting,”the soft has not looked great,it’s not been good in qualifying and it’s not looked great in the sprint either.” This uncertainty could potentially open up tactical opportunities during the grand prix.
Norris Anticipates Intense Battle with Antonelli
Lando Norris, who secured a hard-fought sprint victory, anticipates another challenging race against the impressive rookie, Kimi Antonelli. “I learned (in the sprint) that they’re pretty rapid. And I learned that Kimi pushes all the way to the very end,” Norris stated. He acknowledged the looming challenge, adding, “So, in some ways looking forward to it, some ways I’m not. I think it’s going to be a big challenge tomorrow. We have to see what the weather’s going to do again, but so far this weekend’s been clean. So, I’m hoping they don’t ruin it.”
Mercedes Hopeful for Cooler Conditions
Kimi Antonelli, competing in his maiden F1 season and currently holding a best result of third place, believes cooler temperatures expected on Saturday could favor Mercedes. “The pace this morning was really strong,” Antonelli said. “It was also quite cold and tomorrow should be kind of the same. So maybe that can definitely help us a little bit more.” He also acknowledged the difficulty of overtaking, stating, “But, you know, running in dirty air is never easy. Hopefully, we can have a strong pace and put pressure on them and hopefully we can fight for the win.”
