A pivotal moment looms for Malmö FF as the club accelerates its search for a new head coach, with Danish tactician Lars Friis emerging as a leading candidate. The 49-year-old is scheduled to meet with club officials on Wednesday for an interview, signaling a significant step in the selection process.
Malmö FF acted swiftly to dismiss Henrik Rydström in late September following a string of disappointing results. Shortly thereafter, Anes Mravac was appointed as interim manager to stabilize the team through the remainder of the season. Since then, the club has been diligently evaluating a diverse pool of candidates, encompassing both Swedish and international coaching talent.
Previous Candidate Falls Through
Earlier reports indicated that Thomas Thomasberg was under consideration, but the Danish coach accepted a position with Polish club Pogon Szczecin, removing him from contention. This development has further focused the club’s attention on Friis, who is now considered one of the primary names in the running.
According to sources, the coaching search has reached a critical juncture. “It is clear that Friis is one of the few names left in the process for the job at MFF,” a senior official stated. While a final decision has not yet been made, Malmö FF anticipates naming a new head coach in the coming weeks.
Friis’s Impressive Track Record
Lars Friis brings a wealth of experience to the table, having managed several prominent Danish clubs including Ålborg, Viborg FF, and AGF Århus. He also served as an assistant coach and academy coach at FC Midtjylland, and even held the managerial position at Brentford B.
However, Friis’s most notable achievement came during his tenure as head coach of Czech powerhouse Sparta Prague, a role he held from July 2024 to May 2025. During his time in Prague, he secured two Czech league titles and one domestic cup victory.
Notably, Friis led Sparta Prague to a Champions League playoff victory against Malmö FF in August 2024, eliminating the Swedish side from the competition. He is currently available after departing the Czech club earlier this year.
Friis’s familiarity with Malmö FF, coupled with his proven success in European football, makes him an attractive prospect for the Swedish club. The outcome of Wednesday’s interview will be crucial in determining whether he will be tasked with leading Malmö FF into a new era.
