Russia responded to Western support for Ukraine with threatening gestures. A clear warning was issued specifically for London. An insight into the night’s proceedings.
With a nuclear drill and the summoning of diplomats, the Russian leadership responded to US arms deliveries and statements from European leaders supporting Ukraine. The US government has criticized the halting maneuver of its tactical nuclear forces announced by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
“It is simply reckless and irresponsible for the leader of a major nuclear power to sharpen his saber the way he does on the potential use of nuclear weapons,” National Security Council Communications Director John Kirby said Monday. Despite the “reckless rhetoric,” the US government has not noticed anything that would cause it to change its posture of strategic deterrence. Moscow also threatened Great Britain.
Moscow is threatening Britain with successful missile strikes
After British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said that Ukraine had the right to defend itself and use missiles supplied by its country to attack Russian territory, the reaction from Moscow was prompt: the ambassador of Great then and received a note of protest in hand, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia announced on Monday. Cameron again pledged support for Ukraine during his visit to Kiev last week. According to the British news agency PA, he emphasized during his trip that it was up to Kiev to decide whether to use the weapons provided. – In any case, Ukraine has the right to carry out retaliatory attacks on targets in Russia.
The French ambassador must also go to roll call
After the British ambassador, the French representative was also sent to Moscow. When called, Moscow asked for statements from President Emmanuel Macron, who did not want to rule out the deployment of French troops in Ukraine, destructive and irresponsible. Despite such threats, Russia will not allow itself to be deterred from its war goals and will achieve them, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Russia previously announced a maneuver by its tactical nuclear forces. The use of “non-strategic nuclear weapons” should be practiced. It was not clear at first where and when the exercise would start. The Kremlin justified the maneuver with Western provocations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the purpose of the maneuver was to cool “hot heads in Western capitals”. Cameron and Macron in particular were criticized.
Zelensky is pushing for speed on promised arms deliveries
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is continuing to push for higher deliveries of promised weapons from the West. “The political decisions must be followed by real logistics – the weapon that our soldiers receive,” Zelensky said in his daily video address. To achieve this, cooperation with partners, especially the United States of America, must be better coordinated.
After months of deadlock in the House of Representatives, the US released a military aid package to Ukraine worth $61 billion (57 billion euros) about two weeks ago. According to information from the White House and the Pentagon, arms deliveries should begin within a few days.
A difficult situation ahead for Ukraine
However, Ukraine is still on the defensive. Commander-in-chief Olexander Syrskyj, from whom Zelenskyj received a situation report, wrote about a difficult situation ahead. The enemy still has more personnel, weapons and technical equipment available and is therefore attacking Ukrainian positions on a daily basis. The main Russian military forces are targeting the cities of Kurakhove and Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
