TOAST – From Satanism to the altar. It is the extraordinary story of a man who broke free from Satan, helped the last ones and climbed Heaven. The life of the Blessed Bartolo Longo, a lawyer in the service of church, thanks to the initiative of the cultural association “L’Isola che non c’e” and the collaboration of three municipalities of Brindisi, it can now become a movie. The first take of a short film to promote the figure of the Blessed, founder of the basilica of Pompei and find a producer willing to invest in his life, he will turn tomorrow, just to Latiano, in the house where Bartolo Longo was born back in 1841. Then in the following three days the nearby centers of Mesagne e Weather in Francavilla Fontana (these cities are fundamental for the collection of funds which in 1876 would have allowed Bartolo Longo to build the basilica in the Pompeii Valley) and to end up in the district house of Brindisi; symbolic place to explain the life of a character who first refuted the Lombrosian theories based on the concept of the criminal by birth.
Al Bano will also be the testimonial
Bartolo Longo was able to demonstrate, instead, that by helping the children of prisoners, giving them a chance for social reintegration, that theory was anything but scientific. The screenplay of the video will involve young professional actors, but also local extras led by the Apulian director Alessandro Zizzo and with the participation of Al Bano Carrisi, passionate testimonial of the life of this character who is entrusted with the task of narrating voice in the film.
All the municipalities involved
Shooting at no cost thanks to the availability of the director, actors, technicians, sound engineers, electricians, costume designers and workers, will involve the municipalities of Latiano, Francavilla and Mesagne. These are the centers which, together with Latiano, represented an important point of reference for the cultural formation of the Blessed. And from the more “earthly” point of view, contributed to the donations collected by the Blessed for the construction of the basilica of Pompeii, one of the most important pilgrim destinations in the world.
The lawyer with a past as a Satanist
The extraordinary initiative of making the short film could represent a unique opportunity to promote the figure of the Blessed. He was an ordinary man, a lawyer by profession with a past as a Satanist who, after starting his path of faith, made an extraordinary contribution to the Church (his plea to the Madonna of the Rosary is the most recited in the world) and who, in his actions aimed at the poor, helped the children of prisoners in their social reintegration, employing them in jobs such as that of a typography in Pompeii that still today prints millions of copies distributed by subscription throughout the world.

The video – directed by Alessandro Zizzo – represents both for the originality of the protagonists involved (Al Bano is an artist who has already experimented with the camera) and for the original music that will be the soundtrack, written for the occasion from maestro Alterisio Paoletti, a promising start for the making of a real film on this important figure of the Church. This project has been aimed at by the same association «L’isola che non c’e» for years, which managed to save the birthplace of the Blessed from the sale to private individuals after an awareness campaign that involved Al Bano himself in 2017. Finally, thanks to a financial contribution that the association obtained in 2018 from Puglia region, it was possible to purchase the property, now owned by all citizens.
Citizenship in Carrisi
For this fundamental commitment (which saw him alongside the Association) the Municipality of Latiano will approve in the City Council, convened for the end of the month the honorary citizenship of the great artist of Cellino San Marco. On Monday, on the occasion of the start of filming, all the protagonists of this adventure will be present in Latiano together with the three mayors, Mino Maiorano, of Latiano, Antonello Denuzzo of Francavilla Fontana, Toni Matarrelli of Mesagne, candidate city for Capital of Culture 2024 and to the parish priest of Mother Church of Latiano, Don Salvatore Rubino, the church in which Bartolo Longo was baptized.
