The director of the Morocelí penal center, El Paraíso, known as “La Tolva”, Colonel José Rodimiro Arita Otoniel, and the legal representative of the maximum security prison, Luis Antonio Rodríguez Alvarado, were sent to the Támara National Penitentiary yesterday afternoon.
In a hearing for the accused’s declaration, a judge with national jurisdiction in matters of organized crime and corruption, issued judicial arrest against Arita Otoniel and Rodríguez Alvarado, who are presumed responsible for committing the crimes of money laundering and violation of duties of officials to the detriment of social security and public administration.

The director of the penal center and the legal representative were captured on Thursday, after the Public Ministry issued the preventive detention and after the investigative proceedings the prosecutor’s request was presented for the crimes of money laundering and violation of the duties of officials.
The MP announced that these actions arise from the investigations related to the officials for contributing to maras and gangs, in an apparent delivery of almost half a million lempiras to those deprived of liberty.
The State’s prosecuting body will investigate the origin of the money, who took it to the prison, who it was intended for, and whether it was intended to be laundered as the proceeds of extortion.
It is worth mentioning that in the Morocelí penal center there are only members of Gang 18 who are in prison and who are accused of different crimes.
