The actor, whose film was crowned at the Oscars in 2020, was buried on Friday. His widow burst into tears as she accompanied him on his final journey.

The actor was found dead in his car on Wednesday – after a suspected suicide. His lawyer said he was under pressure because of an intense police investigation into a drug extortion case.

According to Lee’s lawyer, the star begged police not to make the investigation public. Because: Strict anti-drug laws apply in South Korea. The mere accusation of consumption causes immense damage.

According to media reports, Lee has already been banned from television and advertising projects and is said to have lost out on income of around seven million euros.

Accusations to the police

Yu Hyun Jae, a communications expert at Sogang University in Seoul, said on TV that the police and the public, among others, were responsible for his “immense humiliation” with their behavior in the drug investigation against Lee.

Police are accused of fueling the reporting by leaking confidential information, including excerpts from private telephone conversations.

The head of the investigating police officers, Kim Hui Jung, rejected the allegations and emphasized that the investigation was carried out strictly according to the rules.

Vladimir Tikhonov, a Korea expert at the University of Oslo, told AFP that there was no compelling reason to mention “the name of the suspect.” In South Korea, being suspected in a drug case is a punishment, said Tikhonov. The person concerned is certain of “social ostracism”.

And Lee Sun-kyun obviously couldn’t handle this…

When Lee’s lifeless body was taken to the hospital, there were already numerous handwritten farewell notes from fans stuck there. “We’re sorry we couldn’t do anything for you during this difficult time,” one of the notes read.
