Bayer Leverkusen visited Cologne this Sunday, in a game valid for the 24th round of the German Championship, and won 2-0. Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo scored the goals at the RheinEnergieStadion.
The result takes Xabi Alonso’s team to 64 points, maintaining the lead and opening a 10 point advantage to second-placed Bayern Munich, who drew in the round. Colônia, in turn, continues with 17 points, occupying 17th position.
Now, Bayer Leverkusen turns its attention to the Europa League, as it has a duel against Qarabag on Thursday, at 2:45 pm (Brasília time). Cologne’s next match is scheduled for next Saturday, at 11:30 am, against Borussia Monchengladbach, in the German Championship.
Colônia’s life got complicated right at the beginning of the match, 12 minutes into the opening half, when Thielmann stepped on Xhaka’s heel. After review by VAR, the referee opted to expel the home team’s attacker.
Bayer Leverkusen opened the scoring a few minutes later, at 36. Grimaldo was sent in from the left wing and crossed into the area. The ball went through the markers until it reached Frimpong, who only needed to complete the goal.
The championship leader increased the score in the second half, at 23 minutes. Amine Adli won the ball on the left wing and passed to Grimaldo, who was invading the area. At first, the full-back finished and the ball went under the rival goalkeeper’s legs.
