After missing out on the Golden Ball, Robert Lewandowski tonight (Monday) won the FIFA Player of the Year award for the second time in a row, after defeating Leo Messi and Muhammad Salah. The Bayern Munich striker, who also missed out on the Globe Player of the Year award last month, has finally received recognition for his incredible year.
The award has existed for a total of five years, with the record to date being Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won twice (2016, 2017). Later, Luca Modric (2018), Messi (2019) and, as mentioned, Lewandowski (2020) won.
The award was measured by players’ data between October 8, 2020 and August 7, 2021. During that time, Messi scored 43 goals and 17 assists in 57 games, including the most situations he created, big situations, successful dribbles and the Player of the Year awards. Lewandowski scored 51 goals in 44 games during this period.
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may not have won, but their votes have been revealed. The flea voted for Neymar, Killian Ambape and Karim Benzema. The Portuguese, on the other hand, voted for Lewandowski, Canta and Giorgini. The winning Pole voted for Giorgini, Messi and Ronaldo. Sergio Busquets selected Messi, Lewandowski and the Netherlands.
