Lima Heatwave: High Humidity & ‘Bochorno’ to Last Until Feb 21st

by mark.thompson business editor

Lima residents are bracing for a weekend of intense heat, with the “sensación térmica” – or “feels like” temperature – expected to reach 32.5°C (90.5°F) in some districts, according to Peru’s National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (Senamhi). The unusually warm conditions are linked to a combination of summer showers and humidity, creating what many are describing as oppressive “bochorno,” a Spanish term for stifling, humid heat.

The elevated temperatures aren’t uniform across the sprawling metropolis. Senamhi specialist Raquel Loayza explained that Lima’s unique microclimates mean the intensity of the heat varies significantly from neighborhood to neighborhood. Districts east of the city center, including La Molina, Ate, and Chosica, are forecast to experience maximum temperatures of 30-31°C (86-88°F), but the humidity will push the perceived temperature higher. Understanding the impact of these microclimates is key to preparing for the heat.

The current weather pattern is driven by the convergence of two distinct sources of moisture: relatively cool ocean air and humidity originating from the Andes mountains. Loayza described how the cooler sea temperatures create heavier air, limiting wind flow. “With the cold sea and the cloud cover coming from the Andes, there is a confinement of both humidities. The humidity adheres to the skin, the pores do not breathe normally and that is when the thermal sensation increases and the bochorno is perceived among people,” she stated, according to reporting by Agencia Andina.

Localized Showers Offer Limited Relief

Despite the overall heat, localized showers have been reported in various parts of Lima and Callao, with approximately 0.2 millimeters (0.008 inches) of rainfall recorded in areas like La Molina and Villa María del Triunfo. Still, any respite from the heat is short-lived. The asphalt quickly dries under the sun, and the humidity returns, intensifying the discomfort.

The Senamhi station in Jesús María is forecasting a maximum temperature of 28°C (82.4°F), but the “feels like” temperature is expected to reach 29.5°C (85.1°F). In northern Lima, districts such as Comas and Carabayllo are predicted to reach 31°C (87.8°F), with a humidity level of 95% in the morning exacerbating the sensation of heat.

Understanding the ‘Sensación Térmica’

The “sensación térmica,” or heat index, is a crucial metric for understanding the true impact of the weather. It combines air temperature and humidity to determine how hot it actually *feels* to the human body. High humidity hinders the body’s ability to cool itself through evaporation, leading to a higher perceived temperature. This is particularly relevant in Lima, where the combination of warm temperatures and high humidity creates challenging conditions.

Loayza emphasized that the current conditions are not unusual for this time of year, but the confluence of factors is contributing to the particularly strong “bochorno.” The Senamhi has been monitoring the situation closely and providing regular updates to the public. The agency’s forecasts are available on their website: https://www.senamhi.gob.pe/.

Looking Ahead: When Will the Heat Subside?

The Senamhi forecasts that the increased thermal sensation will continue through Saturday, February 21st. “The weather is very dynamic and is changing, but we estimate that a lot of heat will be felt until this weekend, despite the fact that there are mornings or nights with showers,” Loayza noted. However, a shift in the weather pattern is anticipated starting Tuesday or Wednesday, February 24th or 25th, with a potential decrease in rainfall.

“the presence of winds will increase, which would improve the weather conditions in Lima, but this will be confirmed with daily monitoring,” Loayza added. The potential for increased winds could offer some relief from the stifling humidity, but residents are advised to stay informed about the latest forecasts from Senamhi.

As Lima navigates this period of intense heat, staying hydrated, seeking shade, and avoiding strenuous activity during peak hours are crucial steps to protect against heat-related illness. The Senamhi will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the weather pattern evolves.
