Liver Cancer & Men’s Health: Risks & Symptoms

by Grace Chen

The lingering fatigue after Lunar New Year celebrations, often attributed to overindulgence, could signal a more serious underlying issue: vitamin deficiencies. While many dismiss post-holiday sluggishness as a temporary consequence of rich foods and alcohol, experts are urging individuals to consider the possibility of nutritional imbalances, particularly as highlighted by recent health concerns surrounding public figures like former wrestling champion Sim Kwon-ho.

Sim Kwon-ho, 53, recently revealed his diagnosis of early-stage liver cancer, a revelation that has prompted increased attention to liver health and the often-silent progression of the disease. The diagnosis was shared on the TV Chosun program “Joseon’s Love Hunter,” where Sim Kwon-ho also admitted to relying on alcohol to cope with loneliness, a pattern that may have contributed to his condition. According to a report in the Money Today, the program aired on February 2nd, coinciding with National Liver Cancer Day in Korea.

The Silent Threat of Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is often called a “silent organ” because it frequently exhibits no noticeable symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly. As Kyung Hee University Hospital hepatologist Park Ye-wan explained, “The liver, like the name ‘silent organ’ suggests, doesn’t send out warning signals until a considerable portion of the liver cells are destroyed.” This is due to the liver’s limited number of nerve cells, meaning that pain or other abnormalities are often only felt when the cancer has invaded the outer layer of the organ.

Despite being one of the most challenging cancers to treat, survival rates for liver cancer have improved in recent years. The five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed between 2019 and 2023 was 40.4%, a significant increase from the 20.6% rate observed between 2001, and 2005. However, it remains the second deadliest cancer in Korea, following lung cancer, with a mortality rate that is still only half the overall cancer survival rate of 75%.

Beyond Alcohol: Risk Factors and Prevention

While excessive alcohol consumption is a well-known risk factor for liver cancer, it’s not the only cause. The disease often develops as a result of chronic inflammation and damage to the liver cells, leading to abnormal growth. Common contributing factors include chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B and C, obesity-related fatty liver disease, and prolonged alcohol use. Sim Kwon-ho’s case highlights that even individuals who maintain a physically active lifestyle are not immune to the disease.

The revelation of Sim Kwon-ho’s diagnosis prompted a temporary halt to the “53-year-old bachelor Sim Kwon-ho matchmaking project” on “Joseon’s Love Hunter.” As reported by the Health Chosun, Sim Kwon-ho initially avoided a health checkup, fearing the potential implications of a diagnosis and the scrutiny it might bring. He expressed concerns about being judged and the impact on his family, leading him to initially conceal his condition.

The Link Between Fatigue, Alcohol, and Vitamin Deficiency

The post-holiday fatigue experienced by many can be exacerbated by vitamin deficiencies, particularly those related to liver function. Alcohol consumption, even moderate, can interfere with the absorption and metabolism of essential vitamins, including B vitamins, vitamin D, and vitamin C. These vitamins play crucial roles in energy production, immune function, and overall well-being. A deficiency can manifest as fatigue, weakness, and a general feeling of malaise.

Sim Kwon-ho admitted to consuming large amounts of alcohol to cope with feelings of loneliness, often resulting in extended periods of sleep. He noted that his ability to recover from alcohol consumption had diminished with age. This cycle of alcohol use and poor recovery can further deplete vitamin stores and compromise liver health.

Recognizing the Signs and Seeking Help

It’s critical to distinguish between typical post-holiday fatigue and symptoms that may indicate a more serious health issue. Persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and swelling in the abdomen are all potential warning signs that warrant medical attention. Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes in liver cancer and other liver diseases.

Sim Kwon-ho’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritizing health and seeking help when needed. His initial reluctance to address his health concerns underscores the stigma that can often surround illness and the fear of judgment. He ultimately expressed gratitude for the support of the program’s production team, acknowledging the importance of having someone to confide in.

The Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare offers resources and information on liver health and cancer prevention. Regular checkups, a balanced diet, moderate alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight are all essential steps in protecting liver health.

As Sim Kwon-ho continues his treatment and recovery, his case highlights the need for increased awareness of liver cancer and the importance of addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of health. The next update on his condition is expected following his ongoing treatment, as reported by TV Chosun.
