In the two subsequent elections after the Thoothukudi corporation, the AIADMK-Way has won the mayoral post. Out of a total of 60 wards, the DMK and its allies, the Congress, are contesting in 50 of the 7 wards, while the CPM, CPI and Muslim League are contesting in one ward each. The AIADMK is contesting in all 60 wards. Of these, DMK and AIADMK are contesting face to face in 50 wards.
According to the DMK, Jagan Periyasamy, brother of Geethajivan, the DMK leader in charge of the Thoothukudi North district and the MLA for the Thoothukudi constituency and the Minister for Women’s Welfare and Social Welfare, is being fielded as the mayoral candidate.
Jagan is the son of the late Periyasamy, known as the ‘rogue devotee’ of the artist who held the DMK in Thoothukudi district in his hands for more than 30 years. When Periyasamy fell ill, he wrote a letter to Stalin saying, “Give my son the post of district secretary to me.” After his death, the district was divided into North and South, but the post of Northern District Officer was given to Geeta Jeevan. Kanimozhi was given the MP seat that was available to Jagan in the previous Lok Sabha elections. At the same time, it was rumored that Jagan would be the mayor of Thoothukudi.
