For Luca johnson, 27, the event was a first. Dressed as Bilbo Baggins on Saturday afternoon, he admitted, “I’ve never seen the trilogy before in the cinema. I love the films. It’s going to be absolutely epic.” He prepared for the 736-minute commitment with a giant bag of popcorn and a Dr Pepper.

the re-release, spearheaded by Warner Bros., commemorates the 25th anniversary of the films, which have captivated audiences since their initial debut between 2001 and 2003. Before the marathon began, fans in Reading were treated to a special message from Sir Peter Jackson, the trilogy’s director, expressing his gratitude for their dedication.
Stuart Sharpe, 32, sought the “memory” of completing the extended editions marathon in a cinema, accompanied by his girlfriend, Lucy Grant, 35, a first-time viewer. Sharpe confessed to a previous, even more aspiring viewing spree: waking up at 4 a.m. to watch all three Hobbit films followed by the original trilogy, back-to-back.
The appeal extends beyond nostalgia. Stacey Lane, 40, attended with her nephew, recalling watching the original films with her twin sister at the turn of the century. “I’ve got all the DVDs but nothing comes close to seeing it in the cinema,” she said, sporting a knitted Lord of the Rings jumper. Her nephew, Hayden, arrived equipped with a replica of the Ring of Power, demonstrating a deep knowledge of the saga.
For many, The Lord of the Rings remains a cinematic benchmark. As Follows put it, “movies weren’t made like this before the trilogy, and they haven’t been made like it since. So much of the trilogy’s texture comes from the fact that it was built… It’s a physical world, not a digital one, and that makes a difference.”
