Major General Andrei Matievich has been appointed First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus. The corresponding decree No. 212 was signed on July 18 by Alexander Lukashenko, his press service reports.

Andrei Matievich previously held a slightly lower position – he was deputy chief of the General Staff and head of the territorial defense department.

The post of first deputy chief has been vacant since February, when Major General Igor Korol was dismissed from this position due to age.

Andrei Matievich was born on September 2, 1971 in the village of Bolshoye Olzhevo, Lida district, studied at the Minsk Suvorov School, then graduated from the Almaty Higher Combined Arms Command School, later – the Combined Arms Academy of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation named after. Frunze and the Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, all institutions – with a gold medal or a red diploma. He served in the main operational department of the General Staff, and since 2020 he has been heading the territorial defense. He received the shoulder straps of Major General in 2021 from the hands of Alexander Lukashenko.
