Luton captain Tom Lockyer left the hospital on Wednesday where he had been since his heart attack on December 16 during the match, his club announced on Thursday, without giving any indication of the rest of his career.

The 29-year-old defender “began a period of rehabilitation in the comfort of his home following his release from hospital on Wednesday,” Luton Town FC said. The club promoted to the Premier League evokes “encouraging news” which occurred after the successful break on Tuesday of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator “to avoid a repeat of Saturday’s incident”.

This device allows you to monitor your heart rate and intervene in the event of an abnormality. This is what allowed Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, victim of a heart attack in 2021 at the Euro, to continue his professional career, currently at Manchester United.

Not the first scare for the defender

Lockyer suffered discomfort and collapsed on the Bournemouth pitch on Saturday in the championship, a worrying scene which recalled a similar scare experienced by “Locks” in the final of accession to the Premier League at the end of last season at Wembley .He then underwent an operation to correct a heart abnormality, atrial fibrillation, which causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.

Always in contact with the team

“We can now confirm that tests carried out this week revealed that the problem Tom experienced on Saturday was different from the atrial fibrillation he suffered in May,” Luton said in its statement on Thursday. “We are very proud to having Locks as captain and his leadership will continue from the sidelines where his courage will inspire his teammates, colleagues and supporters, starting on Saturday (against Newcastle, editor’s note),” added the north London club.

Saturday’s match, stopped after Lockyer’s heart attack, will be completely replayed, on a date not yet determined, the English Professional League announced on Wednesday.
