The Supreme Court of Justice today elected Luz Adriana Camargo as the new Attorney General, replacing Francisco Barbosa.
After a day of deliberation and considering the context of the resignation of one of the candidates, The 23 judges of the Supreme Court of Justice made a momentous decision this March 12: They elected Luz Adriana Camargo as the new Attorney General of the Nation in an extraordinary room.
The appointment of Camargo, a prominent jurist with extensive experience in the public sector, marks the history of the tenth Attorney General of the Nation. Her career includes important roles as massistant registrar of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice and as an investigator of parapolitical cases. Furthermore, he was part of the team of lawyers who collaborated with the current Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquezin the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG).

With a significant support of 18 votes, Camargo was elected to the position of Attorney General. Voting began in December of last year and culminated this Tuesday in an extraordinary room convened by the Plenary Chamber. The news came at a time of uncertainty, since just Hours before the vote, another candidate, Amelia Pérez, had resigned from the shortlist.
The resignation
Amelia Pérez, a lawyer from Bogotá with a solid academic background in Law and Criminology, decided to withdraw from the race shortly before the election. Another of those nominated by President Petro was Ángela Buitrago Ruiz, also a lawyer with a specialization in Criminal and Criminological Sciences from the Externado University of Colombia.
The election of Luz Adriana Camargo as Attorney General of the Nation marks the beginning of a new stage in Colombian justice. It is worth mentioning that while the new prosecutor was being elected, Martha Mancera was in charge.
