Banerjee Launches ₹344 Crore Mahakaal Temple Project, New Bus Services in West Bengal

Meta Description: west Bengal Chief Minister Mamata banerjee initiated a major infrastructure and religious project with the foundation of a new Mahakaal temple and the launch of over 40 bus routes.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday laid the foundation stone for a large-scale Mahakaal temple project in siliguri, estimated to cost ₹344.2 crore,is coupled with the launch of more than 40 new bus services, including six luxury sleeper buses, designed to improve transportation links between north and south Bengal.

temple Project Aims to Transform Siliguri into a Cultural Hub

Banerjee envisions the new temple as a landmark destination, stating, “We will build the world’s highest idol of Mahakaal here.” The temple will serve as a replica of the existing Mahakaal temple in Darjeeling town and is intended to be more than just a place of worship. “This will be a centre of cultural and religious study as well. It will generate employment,” she explained. Banerjee’s ambition is to reposition Siliguri, currently viewed as a transit point, as a thriving center for religion, culture, and tourism.

The state government has allocated 17 acres of land for the Mahakaal temple complex, land previously leased to a private real estate company but left undeveloped. The land was later transferred to the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority following a cabinet decision on November 24.

Political Implications Ahead of Assembly Elections

The timing of the project has drawn scrutiny, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing Banerjee of attempting to regain lost ground in the region. With Assembly elections looming, manny observers believe the move is a strategic effort by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to counter the BJP’s strong presence in north Bengal.

In the 2021 state polls, the BJP secured victories in the Matigara-Naxalbari and Siliguri Assembly seats. More broadly, the BJP won 30 of the 54 assembly seats across the eight north Bengal districts, despite the TMC’s overall victory of 213 out of 294 seats statewide. The BJP also demonstrated notable strength in the region during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, securing seven of the eight parliamentary seats in north Bengal.

Expanding Religious and Infrastructure Initiatives

This latest initiative follows the inauguration of the Jagannath temple at Digha in East Midnapore district in June.Banerjee announced plans for the Mahakaal temple in October of last year, emphasizing her government’s commitment to promoting culture and tourism. “We built the Jagannath temple with the intention to promote culture and tourism. Millions are visiting it now,” she stated. She also revealed plans to establish a Darga Angan in Kolkata with a similar focus.

Banerjee detailed plans for the temple’s management, stating that a trust will be formed with monks as members, mirroring the arrangement for the homes of Swami Vivekananda and Sister Nivedita in Kolkata, which are managed by the Ramakrishna Mission.

Furthermore, Banerjee announced progress on infrastructure projects aimed at improving pilgrimage access, including a bridge to Ganga Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas, being constructed by Larsen & Toubro, to replace boat travel for pilgrims.she recently laid the foundation stone for this bridge.

However, the use of public funds for religious construction has sparked debate. Bengal BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar argued, “A state government cannot spend money from the exchequer to build temples, mosques or churches.”

The multifaceted initiatives unveiled by banerjee underscore her administration’s focus on bolstering both religious tourism and regional infrastructure in West Bengal as the state prepares for upcoming elections.
