The University of Maine track and field team showcased its prowess at the Black Bear Invitational on Friday, December 12, securing first place with a commanding 97 points against the University of Maine at Fort Kent Bengals and the Husson University Eagles at the New Balance Indoor Track. The Black Bears demonstrated remarkable athleticism across a wide range of events, setting the stage for a promising spring semester.
Black Bears Claim Top Spots in Throwing Events
Cheyenne Figueroa delivered a standout performance in the weight throw,continuing a strong start to the season with a winning distance of 16.93m (55′ 7″).Ava Zollars secured second place with a throw of 13.96m (45′ 10″), while Sabine sites rounded out the top three at 13.06m (42′ 10″). In the shot put, Julia Bassi took first place with a distance of 11.86m (38′ 11″), closely followed by figueroa in second at 11.83m (38′ 9.75″). Riley Gavigan achieved a top-five finish in the shot put, placing fifth with a throw of 9.19m (30′ 1.75″).
Jumping to Success
Athena Cusson led the Black Bears to victory in the long Jump, achieving a winning jump of 5.58m (18′ 3.75″). Saphryn Humason followed with a second-place finish at 5.41m (17′ 9.25″), and Bayleigh Shanahan secured third place with a jump of 5.38m (17′ 8″).in the high jump, Lydia White cleared 1.65m (5′ 5″) to take first, with Humason (1.55m / 5′ 1″) and Shanahan (1.55m / 5′ 1″) tying for second.
Distance Runners Shine
Adeline Hutchins dominated the 5000m Run,finishing in 17:48.92,well ahead of teammates Ruby Krasnow (18:29.42) and Natalie Johnson (10:47.70) completed the top three. Meredith Walters won the 1000m Run in 3:02.34, with Abby rodriquenz (3:02.78) and Emma Tessier (3:09.71) finishing second and third, respectively.
Sprint and Hurdle Performances
Athena Cusson continued her impressive performance, winning the 60m Hurdles with a time of 10.47 as the only Black Bear competitor. The Black Bears also showcased their speed in the 60m dash, sweeping the top three spots. Bayleigh Shanahan finished first in a swift 7.97 seconds, followed by Catherine Primavera (8.12) and maddie Chaput (8.20). Maddie Cyr captured first place in the 300m Dash with a time of 42.72, with Cassidy Novicka (43.16) and Primavera (43.25) securing second and third place.
Relay Success and Looking Ahead
the team of Ryan O’Connor, Addison Nelson, Megan Randall, and Ruby Krasnow dominated the 4000m Distance Medley Relay, finishing first in 12:33.45. Natalie Johnson, Bri Harriman, Searcy Mooney, and Kennedy Taylor finished second (12:49.99), while Kara Tschida, Cassidy Novicka, Amy Rein, and Lauren Hamilton rounded out the top three (12:55.76). The 4×200 Metre Relay team of Maddie Chaput, Lydia White, catherine Primavera, and Saphryn Humason concluded the evening with a first-place finish in 1:50.13.
