Mali and Burkina Faso have submitted an official communication to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarding withdrawal from the group.

Agence France-Presse reported that it had seen a copy of the official letter that Mali sent to ECOWAS regarding its withdrawal from the organization.

The Burkinabe AIB news agency also quoted its sources as saying that Burkina Faso had also sent an official communication regarding its withdrawal from ECOWAS.

On Sunday, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger announced their decision to withdraw from the economic bloc, which the three countries accused of imposing “illegitimate and inhumane sanctions” against them.

ECOWAS said on Sunday that it intends to find a negotiated solution to the issue, noting that it has not yet received official communications regarding the aforementioned countries’ withdrawal from it.

It is worth noting that the ECOWAS group took measures against Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso against the backdrop of military coups in those countries in recent years, the most recent of which was the coup in Niger in July 2023.
