González Downplays Rodri Comparisons Ahead of Villarreal Clash
Manchester City’s Nico González insists he isn’t striving to replicate Ballon d’Or winner Rodri’s impact as he prepares to deputize in Tuesday’s Champions League match against Villarreal.
Manchester City midfielder Nico González has emphasized he doesn’t view himself as a direct replacement for the injured Rodri, as the team prepares for a crucial Champions league fixture. The 23-year-old is expected to fill the void left by Rodri, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained before the recent international break – an injury that continues a frustrating pattern following knee surgery that kept him out for much of last season.
González, signed from Porto in January specifically to provide cover in the central defensive midfield position, acknowledges he actively seeks guidance from Rodri during matches. however, he firmly rejects any comparisons.”I don’t look at news,” González told reporters at a press conference held at Villarreal’s Estadio De la Ceramica.”I don’t know what you guys are talking about. He is a teammate. it’s important for the team he makes us play so good, but I don’t see any comparison or pay much attention to those things.”
The young Spaniard highlighted his willingness to learn from Rodri’s experience. “I try to listen and learn a lot from him. Such as, the last game, at halftime he gave me some advice about what he saw as he knows a lot what to do in that position. He’s one of the captains and that’s a really important role. He tries to advise us and make us understand the way we want to play.”
Interestingly, González revealed his tactical inspiration lies elsewhere, citing Sergio Busquets as a key influence. “In Barcelona when I was young I watched Busquets. When I reached the first team I played with him and learned a lot from him.Maybe he’s the player I’ve learned the most from.”
Rodri himself has traveled with the squad to Villarreal, the club were he began his professional career, despite being unavailable for selection. Manager Pep Guardiola is confident that rodri’s presence will benefit González’s progress. “Hopefully Rodri will be back to train more frequently enough with him, right? but when he’s young, of course, a player of the stature of Rodri always improves them,” Guardiola stated. “Regarding Nico, I have the feeling that he’s getting better and better. It’s not easy sometimes arriving at a new club and playing a different style than he played in the past, but we are really pleased with his behavior and I’m pretty sure he will be better month by month, year by year.”
Villarreal coach Marcelino expressed regret that Rodri will not be able to feature against his former club. “He’s the best player in the world in his position. I’m sure he woudl have loved to play here and Villarreal fans would have loved to see him. He is admired and loved here.”
González’s opportunity to showcase his abilities on Tuesday represents a significant test as he continues
