Man Fights for Life After Assault in West Derby Village
A 33-year-old man is in critical condition in a Merseyside hospital following a violent assault in West Derby Village on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Police have arrested two men in connection with the incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning near the Hare and Hounds public house.
Early Morning Attack Prompts Police Investigation
Emergency services were alerted to the scene at approximately 12:45 a.m. after receiving reports that members of the public were administering CPR to an injured man. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 33-year-old male suffering from severe head injuries. He was immediately transported to Aintree Hospital, where his condition remains critical.
Two Suspects in Custody
A 39-year-old man from Old Swan was arrested at the scene with the assistance of the fire department. A second suspect, a 24-year-old male, later presented himself at a hospital with a facial injury and was subsequently taken into custody. Both individuals are being held on suspicion of Section 18 assault and are awaiting questioning by detectives.
Forensic Examination Underway
A thorough investigation is now underway, with a significant police presence remaining in West Derby Village. A forensics tent has been erected as investigators meticulously examine the area for evidence. Officers are conducting house-to-house inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage to piece together the events that led to the assault.
Police Appeal for Information
Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath emphasized the seriousness of the incident. “This is a serious assault that has sadly left a 33-year man in a critical condition in hospital,” he stated. “The investigation is in its early stages and we are trying to establish the circumstances of what happened.”
McGrath continued, appealing to the public for assistance. “We have spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene and are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward. If you were in the area last night and saw what happened or have any information, let us know as a matter of urgency. If you live in the area or were driving past at the time, I’d ask you to review your CCTV or dashcam footage to see if you captured anything that could help our investigation.”
The detective also expressed gratitude for the swift actions of bystanders. “I would like to take the opportunity to thank the caring members of the public who carried out vital CPR on the injured man at the scene prior to the emergency services attending.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the assault to come forward immediately to aid in the ongoing investigation.
