After the violent death of two people in Fischerhude (Lower Saxony), a 64-year-old man surrendered to the police. He is suspected of killing a 56-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman in a half-timbered house and having previously seriously injured a 53-year-old woman. The police had searched intensively for the man on Wednesday night. According to witnesses, several shots should have been fired in the act.

The police had been on a large scale on Tuesday from around 5 p.m. in the town of Fischerhude (Verden district), which has around 3,000 residents. Special forces were also involved. Neighbors had alerted the police after the 53-year-old woman was covered in blood and escaped to them. “Help me! There is shooting over there,” she said. The neighbors, who were still shocked on Wednesday, immediately provided first aid.

At first, the investigators could not rule out whether the dead man found in the apartment building was possibly the perpetrator. That was cleared up on Wednesday night: Both the woman and the man were victims of a homicide. The search pressure was further increased.

On Wednesday morning, the news came that the 64-year-old had given himself up. He was arrested and was due to be brought before the judge. The police had set up a homicide squad. The investigation is initially due to a homicide – which left it open as to whether the charge would ultimately be manslaughter or murder.

Neighbors in Fischerhude were stunned. The 73-year-old woman was described as friendly and always helpful. It is unclear what the relationship between the victim and the alleged perpetrator was. The seriously injured but approachable woman told the neighbors that she did not know the man. He wore a black leather coat. The investigators initially did not comment on this. The woman is in the hospital.

Fischerhude is a tranquil and idyllic place on the Wümme, which is very popular with holidaymakers and hikers. There are many old half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets. In addition, Fischerhude, which is around 30 kilometers northeast of Bremen, is known as an artist’s place.
