Purchasing power, gap between men and women, average wages… In a study published on Wednesday, while mandatory annual negotiations are held in many companies, INSEE takes stock of private sector employment in 2023.
Therefore, a manager earned, in 2023, on average, 4,573 euros net (or 6,132 euros gross), and an intermediate profession had an average net monthly salary of 2,656 euros (3,519 euros gross). For employees the average was 1,959 euros net per month (or 2,551 euros gross), while workers earned 2,031 euros net (2,638 euros gross) per month.
Salaries vary depending on the sector of activity, with 3,014 euros net per month in industry, 2,439 euros net in construction and 2,706 euros net per month in the tertiary sector.
The burden of inflation
“In 2023, a private sector employee earns an average of 2,735 euros net per month (i.e. 3,613 euros gross) in full-time equivalents”, underlines in the note the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, a salary that “increased by 4% net”.
But with “still strong” inflation (+4.9% in 2023, after +5.2% in 2022) and “slightly reduced” bonuses, “the average net salary decreased by 0.8% in constant euros (taking inflation into account, therefore), after -1% in 2022″, according to INSEE. Concretely, the purchasing power of the average net salary in 2023 is at the level of 2019.
Half of private sector employees received less than 2,183 euros net per month in 2023, estimates INSEE, with such a disparity that “one in ten employees earns less than 1,512 euros, one in ten receives more than 4,302 euros” and “one employee in a hundred earns more than 10,222 euros net, or almost 7.4 times the minimum wage”.
The average net salary «has decreased for all socio-professional categories, in particular for managers (-2.8%), while the decline is more moderate for workers and employees (-0.3% and -0.5% respectively) » thanks to the revaluations of the minimum wage, which are a function of inflation, the note continues.
A narrowing gender gap
A pay gap remains between men and women, even if it tends to reduce. On average, per month, a woman earns 2,508 euros net (3,323 euros gross), compared to 2,898 euros (3,822 euros gross) for a man.
“In 2023, women earn on average 13.5% less than men in terms of full-time equivalent in the private sector,” INSEE highlights. A gap that has reduced by 0.5 points compared to 2022 and by 7.4 points since 2008.
