Manipur landslide death toll rises to 20 It is not known what happened to the 44 people. Rescue operations are ongoing.
A landslide occurred at an army camp in Manipur last Wednesday night. Many people were caught in it. So far 13 soldiers and 5 civilians have been rescued. 20 people died. 15 of them are soldiers.
Due to continuous rain in the accident area, there is a slight delay in rescue operations. Wall radar is being used to search for buried soldiers.
Manipur Chief Minister Byron Singh visited the site last night along with senior army officers and conducted an inspection. The Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident and also announced that the injured will be given Rs 50,000 each.

Earlier yesterday evening, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had condoled the Manipur incident on her Twitter page. He also said that 9 of the 15 soldiers who died were from West Bengal. In his post, I was shocked to learn about the death of 9 people from Darjeeling hills in a landslide in Manipur. My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.
